Pilot Program Tracking NJ Sex Offenders Becomes Permanant

Aug 8, 2007

A pilot program in New Jersey tracking high risk sex offenders by satellite after they leave prison is now permanent. Governor Corzine has signed that legislation into law.

The two-year pilot program was set to expire on Saturday. Gloucester County State Senator Steve Sweeney says high risk sex offenders are now required to wear a global positioning system device when they leave their homes:

“Sex offenders don’t always follow the law and register where they are supposed to be and do what they are supposed to do. So by putting these tracking bracelets on the sex offenders, we don’t have to worry about them registering because we put it on them we know where they are at all the time.”

Currently, 156 sex offenders are being tracked with the GPS device.
