Nudist couple held on child porn counts

Aug 2, 2007

A nudist couple who asked a 14year-old if she’d like to be a porn star during a sexually explicit conversation secretly videotaped are being kept in jail pending their trial on federal child pornography charges.

John C. Shuler, 42, and Heather R. Fiorella, aka Heather Gonsorcik, 32, of 446 22nd St. NW, have been detained pending a Sept. 24 trial. They face charges of conspiracy to produce child pornography and attempt to produce child pornography.

At a detention hearing Wednesday in federal court in Cedar Rapids, Assistant U.S. Attorney Sean Berry detailed what what was depicted on a videotape found during a March search of the couple’s home.

The 14-year-old was secretly videotaped during a mid-2006 discussion with the couple at their home. While nude, Shuler and Fiorella talked with the girl about house sitting when they attended a nudist camp.

While pornography was being shown on a TV in the background, the couple discussed sex, asked the girl about her sexual past and if she’d like to make a videotape.

‘‘ It was about as explicit of a sexual discussion as one can have,’’ U. S. M a g i s t r a t e Judge Jon Scoles said.

They told her it was a good idea to have nude pictures made now so that she could see what she looked like in 10 years. The girl was asked to perform oral sex on Shuler. After the couple offered to show the girl sexual positions, the three left the room with the camera.

The couple, while nude, would have conversations about sex with the girl ‘‘as a way of grooming her for later sexually explicit activity,’’ according to the indictment.

The girl is never nude in the video, and the video is not considered to be child pornography.

Shuler had a nude, sexually explicit photo of a 10- or 11-year-old child in his wallet. During a March search of the home, 10 computer disks were found with child pornography, including two disks with nude pictures of the 10- or 11-year-old.

If convicted, Shuler and Fiorella face at least 15 years in prison.
